Reflecting on a Busy Year

Our final blog of the academic year comes from Alicia, who is just finishing Year 7.  Below are the thoughts and reflections of her first year at AKS, which she kindly and confidently shared with our incoming Year 7 students as part of their induction evening.

Good evening everyone, my name is Alicia Iredale and I’m currently in year 7.  I started AKS last September and came here from Ansdell Primary School.

When I started at AKS I felt a little apprehensive about a few things:

Will I get lost?

Will I make any new friends?

Will I get lots of homework?

No doubt some of you have similar worries… but having been where you are, just a year ago, I can now honestly say that there is no need for you to worry about any of these things…. Everyone is very supportive and friendly at AKS and will do their best to help you settle in and make new friends.  It’s great having different teachers for different subjects in different classrooms; it makes the days much more interesting.

On the first day of school you will get your timetable and then there are lots of fun activities so that you get to know each other; we also did a treasure hunt around school, which is the best way to find out where everything is.  Whilst I was standing in the break queue that first morning, a girl complimented me on my hair, we started chatting, sat together at break, and Grace and I have been inseparable ever since.

Here at AKS, there are lots of different clubs, sports and activities that you can get involved in, and these are definitely one of the best ways to make friends from other forms or even year groups.  My personal interest is sport and this year I’ve played hockey, netball, tennis, rounders, and athletics.  I have friends in every form class in Year 7 and I don’t think that would have happened had I not been so involved in sport.

It’s been such a busy year, I really can’t believe how fast it has gone.  I’ve worked hard but had loads of fun too.

I’d like to leave you with one simple piece of advice:  If you are nice to everyone, smile and compliment people, I am sure you will make lots of friends and enjoy your time at AKS.
